Wow! I'm starting to see things happening. I dropped the needle size to 6 (from 8) because the lace pattern should become more defined. This may matter since the yarn hasn't got the same fuzzy halo as Rowan Kidsilk. There was an oh-so-brief moment when I thought I should have gotten the 3 balls of Kidsilk to make this, but remembered how mohair sheds and all the Butterflies I've seen made with something else.
I'm looking forward to blocking this!
Maybe it's nuts, but I won't be making this in pieces but rather in the round. I think it will do just fine without the side seams especially since I'm not used to sewing up something so fine.
Huzzah for knitting bravely! If this works, I should tackle fair isle next. Maybe even--gasp!--socks. Plural.
So, thanks Anna! My birthday gift arrived late last week. I got myself several balls of Elann Den-M-Nit in black, enough to make an Indigo Ripples Skirt. I really wanted to get the darkest indigo color, but I never had the moolah to get it while it was available...oops.
I also received my yarn order from Webs. It's a cone of 2/14 Alpaca Silk lace weight yarn in the color Sienna. This one will be for Anna's Butterfly tunic which is going to be a birthday and graduation present. I am trying to do a gauge swatch now and, well, this one is gonna take a while! I've never done lace before, at least not like this with super-thin yarn. I'm going to go over the pattern again and see if it's written out instead of charted and see if that helps me at all. I'm also trying to figure out which size I should make. I think lace is very stretchy but I'm not sure how much it will stretch and how much ease is built into the pattern. Suggestions welcomed: do I use the bust or hip measurement if there is a 6" difference (wider at the hip)? EDIT: added photo of swatch. The color is way off.
While I was away, I also started working on a Picovoli for myself in Lion Brand Microspun (black). I liked working with it before and I had five balls in my stash. I'm debating about whether or not to add sleeves to this one, but I've not even gotten past the bust area so it will be a while before I even get to it again, considering the lace project. The way the yarn lays in a very neat |/|/|/|/ pattern is just so cool. Speaking of cool: I want the sleeves to be long-ish if I add them, so they end just above the elbow. The square neck and longer sleeves might look better on me. But I might get impatient. You know how that goes.
Here you are, Joh! This is your birthday present from us (one of them). I will stick it in the mail when we can get out to go to the post office.
Knit with Lion Brand Cotton Ease on size 8 and 10.5 (US) needles in color taupe. Pattern by TragicHeroine. I didn’t opt to sew down the top collar since it’s well-behaved and will fold down on its own. That and Joh can pick wide or narrow collar.
Made for warding off the little bit of chill you can get in air conditioned places.
Please ignore the dirty mirror. I have yet to buy glass cleaner.
The front is split in the middle there because that's going to be a keyhole opening. I'll at ties at the front using a simple crochet chain rather than an i-cord which I think will look too thick.
Yes, I added another row of picots there at the top to match the bottom and to make visual sense of how to go from lace to stockinette only.
I'm hoping that the next time I post on this, it will be finished, washed and blocked with no extra poofy bits on the right and left. We'll see, eh? This one is certainly a challenge for me!
Here we are! Sorry, there was another in-between photo that I failed to post earlier due to a busy weekend (post on that later).
How is it going so far? Don’t look too closely, though, lest you see all the boo-boos I have in the lace part. Also, note the bumps on the right and left. Those are completely unexpected! Those are where I reduced for the waist. Ya live and learn, I suppose, and then hope that they disappear during the blocking stage.
However….things will probably be frogged back a bit again. I did put in some increases after the waist portion and now it feels a little bit big on the top. A normal person would probably feel just fine in this, but I’m not so generous up there (belly area, well, that’s another story).
I haven’t decided yet if I should keep going or if I should take away three rows’ worth of lace and eliminate the increases…still contemplating. I almost want to just keep going to see what it ends up looking like after it’s said and done. Maybe I’ll just go back one set of lace and see…a compromise, but is it a good one?
After three days of knitting, we have this.
I realize it doesn’t really match the lace I’m copying, but that’s because I twisted the stitches that are supposed to be yarn overs. That makes the garment a lot less see-through. That’s the idea anyway and we’ll see if it actually works.
Thing about lace is, you have to be paying close attention at the beginning. If you miss an eensy weensy step, you mess up big time. The succeeding rows rely a lot on faithfulness to the pattern. There’s an object lesson there.
