It’s happened and the proof—in pictures—is here!
J has his first loose tooth. Wow, that came earlier than I thought. After all, he only turned five in January.
It wasn’t quite the same as with NM. I think NM wasn’t excited but J was really upset. He said his tooth hurt as he bit into a slice of pizza. I glanced at his mouth and it looked like crust was stuck in his teeth. I sent him to fetch a toothpick/flosser thingie. When he got back we looked again and I told him his tooth was loose. I then went on to explain he was going to lose it and then, well, he kinda lost it. He tried to bite a piece of pizza but then it hurt so he just wailed.
Things are better now.
His Abba made a joke about toes and aren’t you glad your toes aren’t falling off and you have to grow new adult toes. Then his brother joked about losing baby hair and growing adult hair. Then he had a lollipop.
And all was well, and full of giggles.
It’s never dull.
NM fell on his bike last night. Bad thing: scrapes all on his elbow and knee. Good thing: he didn’t break anything.
J just swallowed a penny. Time to see if the doc wants to see him ![]()
Dear J,
You know, I have to write this down so that we can remember those wonderful things you do that remind me that you do love Jesus so much.
Once again, you showed the generosity that God’s given you. God loves a cheerful giver and you are one! Miss J was so proud of you last night and told me how you shared the cookies we sent to church with you. This time, she pointed out, that you shared to the point that you had almost left yourself with no cookies. Last time, you split yours—a chocolate chip cookie—in half so that R could have one, too. It’s not just sharing that you do, but sharing without hesitation.
On Tuesday, you gladly went with me to Wholefoods so we could grab a few things. You were so well-behaved! So quick to listen when I asked you to stay close and not run off. You were so helpful when we loaded the basket. It was a no-brainer when you asked me if you could have something from the bakery case. We grabbed a canoli for you and sat down to eat it after it was paid for. And then what? You shared with me. I didn’t even have to ask. “Here mom, you want another bite?” “You want more?”
You are a great blessing! I pray you will never “grow weary of doing good” and keep hold of your generous spirit.
Love,
Mom
Grandparents and all, photos and video are here.
Today, after we finished with school, we headed out to Target to get J’s first pair of shin guards, cleats and socks. He was so excited! He helped pick out the shin guards (he had to chose between two) and then he tried on the cleats. He’s size 12 now, by the way, and NM is at size 2. How’d that happen?
When we got home, the boys quickly got their gear on and then scrimmaged outside. Yeah, they were excited.
Later on, we get to the field and we managed to find the group, though a little late. J was really game at the beginning, but when he didn’t make a goal, he got all self-conscious and decided he wanted to go home and sleep. “I’m tired! I’m too tired!” Well, it was true.
The coach was really nice and kept asking him if he wanted to
scrimmage, if he wanted to kick off, if he wanted to play freeze tag
with the ball, etc. He even had the whole team come ask him if he’d
play. That was cute. I brought him back to the field at the
end (not according to his will) so that they could do their cheer:
“Goooooo Dragons!” Their coach was really nice, really sensitive to
this age group. Of course, I’m sure that has something to do with
having his own son in the team
But he did let me know that he was ok with how it went and he didn’t
want to push J at all. He said we always have one like that every year
and it will take time but he’ll warm up to it all.
Yes, the little boys look stinkin’ cute in their cleats.
When we got home, J was so excited he asked me, so hopefully, if I would let him wear his uniform. Of course! We even took more photos. We’ll see if he gets a little more into the action come Saturday at their first game.
We were on the way to the pool today when hubby was telling J something that J didn’t necessarily appreciate hearing.
“UGH” said J.
Hubby said something again.
“UNGH!” said J.
Hubby told him something else.
“Dad! Try again, Dad!”
By the way, if you haven’t been told before, make sure you refer to him as cool and never cute.
I should have posted about this today since he's doing much better. Much, much better and thanks for praying for him.
We went to the doctor yesterday and she took a look in there. He was clearing up; she was sure the other doctor saw a lot more pus inside than she was seeing. Never the less, she felt that the antibiotics should have worked better by now and felt that we needed to get him stronger meds so we did and now he's on the five-day Zithromax.
Today was so nice! He was so much his normal self it was great. He still had tantrums but those are easily chalked up to being four.
I hope to take the boys swimming tomorrow but I'll have to make sure that J does his best to keep his head out of the water!
It's 1:41pm. Hubby just came home from looking for a 24-hr. pharmacy. J has been waking up crying about ear pain. Tylenol doesn't seem to be doing anything. He has no fever, just severe ear ache. Our after-hours clinic appt. is at 8:20am. Guess what? TV seems to help distract him from the pain. Maybe LaMaze is right: you can distract yourself and the pain isn't as bad.
This sentence will direct you to photos as soon as I get unlazy.
Thursday
Our neighbors across the street and two houses down came to our door to invite us to a Super Bowl party. There was no small hint as to the quantities of food and alcohol. Ahem. Our plan is to leave it up to MIL.
Happy were we when our friends who are missionaries to Mexico arrived. It took them a while to drive up since they came all the way from Puebla, near Mexico City. Check a map to get an idea of what a long drive that is. They came up to take care of legal things (Mexican tourist visa so KT can stay another six months plus registering their car). Unfortunately for us, they left their girls at home in Puebla because they just started school. MIL came on the same day, only she was 1 1/2 hours late. Unfortunately, her flight was late at night and I guess the pilot said it was just a day for being late. We went to bed at 1:30 a.m. Oh boy.
Friday
DT and hubby went to deal with the car registration issues and were done lickety split. The women and children headed to Whole Foods for food for J's birthday party plus MIL's goodies. In the afternoon, after a much-needed nap, we all go hiking very nearby so our guests can see where the soccer fun happens.
Saturday
J's birthday party day! Everyone leaves the house to go shopping for J's birthday gifts and I stay to finish clean up and prep for the party and ice the cake. It wasn't the prettiest cake but it sure tasted good, if I do say so myself. I was surprised. Hehe. Hubby was responsible for the yummy burgers. J had a great time. Our gamer friends drove up from San Marcos and one brought her kids. We had a neighbor and friends from church come by, too, with their kids. J had a great party! At one point, his room was full of little people (all boys!) with light sabers or things that passed for light sabers playing together. It was cute! But by the time I got my camera out, the moment had faded. Long party, long day, but lots of fun. In the evening, one of our neighbors came to knock on our door. KT and I were the only ones around (everyone else was watching TV). She intro'd us to her new doggie, Max and told us she also had a new puppy so KT and I went to visit the cute, cute, cute, cute, cute 5 week old baby pure white schnauzer named TJ. Get it? TJ and Max? Heehee. We cuddled that puppy so long I was missed by my kids. Oops! But they got to see the puppy because we brought it over for them to see. J liked it and was so gentle with him but NM was upset and didn't want to pet him (he admitted later it was cute).
Today
DT and KT left just after 9 a.m. and it was hard to say goodbye. Of course. You know, if you've followed my blog, that I hate when people leave. It's like the feeling you can get when the Christmas tree comes down only worse. We all went to church and MIL saw that I meant it when I said our church was tiny (I love it that way!). After a short stop at home to eat and pack, we drove out to Wimberley, a small town with cute shops and such. They have weekend Market Days most of the year with artisan crafts and food, but those won't start up again until March. It's a small town so we exhausted what we could see (one can only take in so many shops when one is a little person) and headed out to find Wimberley Glass Works. We found it and got to see a glass blowing demonstration only we have no idea what the guy made! Oh well.
We drove on into San Marcos, ate at Chipotle and then drove home. Only, we were distracted by Congress Ave. and drove up it to the Capitol. It's really pretty at dusk! The whole grounds are open 24/7 but the building closes at 8 pm, can you believe it? We all toured the building and I had a doozy of a time with the elevator ride and my MIL and hubby had a doozy of a time watching me and the kids peek over the edge of the railing from the 4th floor. I have claustrophobia, they get vertigo with heights :) Now my boys have the vertigo, too, I think.
Then we get home. "Wow," I think to myself, "T's party is so popular, they have a guest parking in our driveway. What cheek!" Only it wasn't a party goer but our friends. They didn't make it back home to Mexico because someone at the border who processed their paper noticed that the DMV clerk completed their paperwork with one significant error in the car's VIN. While it may seem like a waste of a whole day of driving, it was good that someone caught it at the border. Otherwise, if someone on the Mexican side of the border caught that, they could confiscate the Jeep and they'd be without a car over there! So they hope to take care of fixing all of this tomorrow. Please pray for them!
He's four! He's four! He's four years old today! Happy birthday J!
So why is he upset?
"Noooo! No mom, I'm still three!"
I guess it's not official, according to him, unless there's a birthday party. It really made him upset to hear he was four today. So much so that he was all teary-eyed.
Does that mean I still get to say I have a three year old for one more week?
So someone---I don't want to bother looking up who is responsible---wrote some song in the same spirit as Bob Carlysle's "Butterfly Kisses." The lyrics tug at your heart just as strongly and even though I don't have daughters and I am a mom, not a dad, the idea of the fleeting time we have our kids in our care just hits me way too hard.
I have to turn it off and pretend it's just because I have to make sure to listen to the boys chatting with me in the back seat.
And then when it happened this afternoon that I heard that song again, I see in the rear view mirror the top of J's head, I raise my eyes to look at him and I just want to bawl.
He's turning four---FOUR!!!---in four days.
Did we play Hotwheels enough together? Did we read enough stories together? Have I listened long enough to him tell me his stories? Because he has so many of them and you'll hear them play out in the mornings when he's hanging out with his Jojo lion and he teaches Jojo what he is learning (today it was how to wield a light saber).
It goes by so fast!
