Princess Leiah Hat

A long overdue photo of the recipient of the Princess Leia Hat and her daughter. The hat is modeled in its natural habitat, a Star Wars exhibit that happened a couple of months ago in Los Angeles.

Another hat is currently on the needles and is intended for another huge, huge, huge Star Wars fan, my sister in law. She also plans to wear it at a Star Wars convention-ish event coming up.

The hat was supposed to be done a long while ago, but I ran out of yarn. Unfortunately, Webs (yarn.com) is having a massive anniversary sale and every knitter and their brother is placing orders so mine shipped out a week after I ordered. Am I complaining? Not on your life. See, I added five skeins of Brown Sheep Cotton fleece, color candy apple red, for a sweater I plan to make. When I placed the order, they were on sale, too. Hehe. If you want anything on discount, you better head over there soon since it looks like the list of sale yarns is getting shorter!

Le Slouch

Since I had some Patton's SWS left over from my MIL's birthday scarf, I had to do something with it. I wanted a slouchy hat for those "bad hair days" (you know the ones).

Et voila! Le Slouch hat pattern by Knit and Tonic. Knit up in a few days (like, maybe 3 or 4). I did have to get another ball of yarn to complete it. I have more left over but I can't really figure out what to do with what's left. Not much there!

Princess Leiah Hat

It's finished! I'm hoping that the recipient will let me take a pic of her wearing it so I can share it with you. I thought I made the buns a little bit too low...not sure though, so I'll get her opinion before I take it apart.

I learned a new technique with this project called Magic Loop (see small diameter knitting). Normally, when you knit something in the round that is small, you don't use circular needles but double pointed needles. However, if you have an interchangeable needle and cable set along with long enough cables, you can simply use those. It worked really nicely when I was making the buns, however, I thought my stitches could have been neater when I was using the larger sized needles. That's not the technique's fault, just mine for lack of experience.

EDIT: I never gave credit to the source of the pattern. That would be Ansleybleu who has an Etsy shop with the pattern for sale.

Leiah Hat and a Little Dermatology Lesson

Progress on the Princess Leiah Hat. I just need one more bun and then we’re off to assembly.

Knit with Berrocco Pleasure (66% angora, 29% merino wool, 5% nylon) on size 10.5 (hat) and 10 (buns) needles.

The yarn: I love, love, love. I don’t wear brown because it draws attention to my urticaria pigmentosa* spots all over me. But I think I’ll buy more of this yarn so I can make something to wear anyway. Only color left at yarn.com is brown. Maybe I’ll find it in another color somewhere else.

*Not being vain, just practical. I once had a brown shirt I loved that I wore often but so many people asked what the spots on my arms were. It got tiring after a while to answer them. Even my OB/GYN had to be convinced and sent me to a dermatologist for a second opinion. No one ever notices them unless I happen to be wearing brown. Isn’t that funny? Urticaria means hives and pigmentosa just means colored. The spots, which look like age spots only bigger and fewer in number, never go away but they appear when whatever I’m allergic to happens to be around trigger them.
