The Church of Oprah

You know what that made me think? It made me think that she's saying WE are God. While the Bible says that we are made in God's image and likeness, I don't think we are God. I don't think we can fill His shoes. They are far too big.

And it kind of made me angry what she said about God being a feeling experience. I will admit that feelings change (because I'm not arrogant enough to believe or say that I can make my feelings stay constant), and if God were a feeling experience, then that means that there are days when I don't feel God, that God isn't there. And that's not true. Whether or not I feel it, God is there. Will always be there. God never waxes and wanes like the moon. Nor does He change when our feelings change. This is making me angry. I like Oprah for the good things that she does for other people, but I don't like this. I didn't like what she said. And it makes me really angry because she is in a position to influence millions of people.
Good people aren't necessarily God people.

If God were limited to what we expect God to be or what we want God to be or what we demand God to be, then He wouldn't be God; would He?

I like the idea of a God who is unlimited and that I can't, quite frankly, completely understand. Mankind is prone to mess things up so we must have Someone outside ourselves to look to for Truth.

This is such a great post. I often get frustrated when I see or hear of friends, family or acquaintances saying, "You can't limit God." or "You can't put God in a box." Which I find is often a response to someone noting that their beliefs are opposed to the scriptures they say they believe. The convenient thing about this concept is that it allows for picking and choosing which teachings of the Bible we'd like to accept, to become experts on the fallibility and infallibility of the scriptures and to tell others trying to live Sola Scriptura that they are dead in their spirituality, backwards in their ways, out of step with the times and spiritually inferior.

And you are 100% right to note that feelings change. So many verses come to mind but this is the one that has always reminded me that my feelings are not to be put above the word of God.

Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?

Whether or not I feel it, God is there. Will always be there. God never waxes and wanes like the moon.

You're right, He doesn't change. If He did, that would be cruel which is why there does need, logically, to be only one way. Then we aren't left to wonder. And really, God's not a "faith experience" either! Faith is as fickle as the one who has it and if my faith is weak (which is most often) then, is God weak because I am?

I like the idea of a God who is unlimited and that I can't, quite frankly, completely understand.

"You can't limit God." or "You can't put God in a box."

Indeed! His limits are logical: He can't lie, He can't change. A loving God is not a fickle God. Yes, He is really jealous! He loves us and doesn't want to share our attention because He knows it's best.

God's word is not a written Book of Limits. God's word is His way of communicating with us, guiding us and above all, expressing His love to us. Of course we don't "get" it all. Does a five year-old always get the limits placed on him or her? And some limits can't be explained until they're old enough to understand. We're not unlike children in God's eyes. Scratch that, we are children in God's eyes and those who love Him get to call him Dad.

I don't think that Oprah is a mean person or a selfish person. She's done so much for so many and she's such a great example. She had a hard life at the start and look where she is now! But that isn't to say that she shouldn't abuse her influence and affect people.
Oops.. I originally added my comment in the video. Not sure if you can delete it.

Wow.. A friend from church sent me an email awhile back referencing what this book was teaching. I wasn't sure if it was true but now that I saw this video I'm concerned about the world that our children will be growing up in.

I think the fame and fortune has gone to her head. I love watching Oprah because her shows are always full of information but she did strike me as someone who straddles the fence. I've questioned her views before and this just proves where she stands. It's sad that a lot of people will be mislead. It's a sign of times to come though.

This verse comes to mind: Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction , and an haughty spirit before a fall.

People are going to think that they are responsible for their own salvation and will therefore that they can do anything. Here comes Sodom and Gomorah! I'll have to find the email and forward it to you. The author believes that we are not capable of sin and are like God. tsk.. tsk..
The video isn't available anymore, but I bet I could find it on YouTube somewhere under something. I'll look.

I have known that Oprah was way off track from Christianity in her faith for a little while, but this sounds a bit too much. I'll have to check it out. I need to know what there is to combat out there so a defense can be made if it is brought up in conversation.
[this is good]
Great conversation about it.
